The apprenticeship will help you to dive into a dynamic field that spans the Further Education and Skills Sector, working with students aged 14 and above. Whether in general or specialist FE colleges, independent training providers or community learning settings, you’ll have the opportunity to train and play a vital role in shaping the future of learners.

As a Learning and Skills Teacher, you’ll empower students to reach their fullest potential by delivering engaging lessons across a wide range of subjects—academic, vocational, and technical—up to Level 3 and beyond.

You will bring your experience, passion for education and study to create enriching learning environments. You’ll have the opportunity to become a dual-professional and collaborate with fellow educators and industry professionals, keeping your knowledge current.  You will practice adapting your teaching to meet diverse student needs, including those with special educational requirements.

Our comprehensive Learning and Skills Teaching Apprenticeship would be appropriate for you!

The LST apprenticeship is typically spread over two academic years and of 18 months duration.  You will need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week, where you will be able to gain approximately 1200 teaching hours experience over the duration of the programme.  (Part-time teachers will also be accommodated, but the course may take longer).

You will produce a portfolio of evidence to show how you have met the duties, knowledge, skills and behaviours of the apprenticeship. You will then be ready to go through the End Point Assessment, completed by an external assessor.

Entry Requirements

Individual employers will determine the entry criteria, but this will typically include:

  • You must be aged 19 years or over and working in the sector for at least 30 hours a week (part time hours will also be considered).
  • GCSEs grade C/4 or equivalent in maths & English and can demonstrate basic Essential Digital Skills.
  • (Candidates who cannot yet demonstrate these, will be signposted to access appropriate support and/or qualifications prior to starting your course).
  • A willingness to continue to develop personal maths, English and Digital skills to a level required for the LST role.
  • Level 3 or above Vocational qualifications and experience.
  • Competence in a vocational/specialist subject at an appropriate level.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of workplace practice.
  • You also need to be a resident in England and not in full-time education.
  • Successful interview and assessment centre, with two supporting references.
  • A successful enhanced DBS check

 

How your course is assessed:

  • The employer must be content that the apprentice is working at or above the level of the occupational standard.
  • Externally assessed by the End Point Assessment Organisation.
  • Assessment method 1: Lesson observation and professional dialogue.
  • Assessment method 2: Professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.
  • The portfolio of 15 pieces of evidence may include assignment-based assessments, observation of teaching practice and work-based evidence.

How long will it take and where does it take place?

  • The apprenticeship is typically 18 months long and spread over two academic years.  This may vary depending on experience and previous qualifications.
  • It is delivered in person on a Wednesday evening (typically 18:00 – 21:00) or Friday morning (09:00 – 12:30).
