Veterinary Care Support
This apprenticeship is excellent preparation for the VetSkill Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Companion Animal) – the qualification you will need to become a fully qualified veterinary nurse, which is also available at Reaseheath.
The Level 2, however, is a well-recognised qualification in its own right and could help you secure a job working in a veterinary practice as a nursing assistant, or within animal welfare and rescue, boarding kennels and catteries, pet stores or grooming parlours.
Level 2 placements
As an apprenticeship, you will work four days per week in a veterinary practice, and be allocated an additional day per week for remote college learning. You will be paid an apprentice wage.
We do not actively place students within work placements, we encourage you to find your own employment as an apprentice. Please use the below website to find veterinary practices within your area: Home – Find A Vet (rcvs.org.uk)
We strongly recommend that students create a CV and Cover Letter for the purpose of finding employment as an apprentice and deliver these in-person to practice. We find that students who complete a period of work experience within a veterinary practice are more successful at finding employment as a Level 2 apprentice.
What will I study?
- Legislation and Safe Working Practices
- Animal Health and Welfare
- Animal Environment and Accommodation
- Introduction to Patient Care
- Introduction to Animal Anatomy and Physiology
- Veterinary Care Support
How long will it take?
- 12-18 months, full time (including end point assessment)
What qualifications do I need to start?
- Preferably GCSEs at grade C/4 in science, and C/4 in maths OR English language
- Confirmation of employment as an apprentice from a veterinary practice who is willing to support you whilst you work four days per week for the duration of the course
What qualifications will I gain?
- VetSkill Level 2 Certificate in Veterinary Care Support
- Functional skills or GCSE in either maths OR English language, depending on previous qualifications
