International event rider Michael Owen gave top tips on how best to prepare for the coming eventing season during an informative training demonstration at Reaseheath Equestrian Centre.
Michael entertained a capacity audience with a series of schooling exercises suitable for horses at all levels of training. He was partnered by four of his current event horses including long-time campaigner ‘The Highland Prince’, ranked 10th last year in British Eventing’s top horse listings 2016. He also rode 4-star eventer ‘Bradeley Law’, who he is aiming to compete at the world-famous Badminton Horse Trials in May.
By coinciding with the start of the event season, this was a unique opportunity for eventing enthusiasts to gain valuable insight into Michael’s training methods and to benefit from his many years of competition experience.
Michael, who is based at Kelsall Hill Equestrian Centre, chose a range of practical exercises which could be easily applied at home by the audience. From establishing the basics with a novice horse, to perfecting the advanced techniques needed to tackle cross-country fences such as corners, arrowheads and off-set fences, there was something for everyone.
Said Michael: “I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Reaseheath Equestrian Centre and my horses performed amazingly on the fantastic surface in the indoor arena.
