Teaching and learning methods vary according to the nature of the subject matter but include a wide variety, from formal lectures and examinations, to student-centred activities including assignments, reports, essays, presentations, seminars and practical assessments.
Additional methods may be used such as laboratory and practical work, visits to academic conferences (both business and scientific), study tours and work placements. Those studying on a foundation degree complete a work placement over several weeks and are assessed in the work place and on a written assignment. Students carry out a major individual research, work based problem or design project in their final year.
For those studying part time, courses are designed to be flexible in nature to allow students to study and remain in employment. Part time students may attend college for formal teaching one or two days per week, or a day per week, month or term as deemed appropriate by part time or blended learning routes.
Teaching takes place in the classroom, lecture theatre and laboratory, as well as in a more practical environment, depending on your course of choice. All students use the virtual learning environment (VLE) to prepare them for the autonomy expected of HE students. The curriculum is delivered in such a way that there is a lessening reliance on tutor directed study as students progress during their course.
Modules are delivered through practical work and theoretical lectures with the emphasis on the development of industry relevant, professional skills.
